According to Footprint Analytics, transactions related to the GameFi sector jumped 2934% in 2021. The term refers to the fusion of the video game industry with decentralized finance and directly refers to blockchain play-to-earn games that offer economic incentives to players. The GameFi ecosystem uses crypto-currencies, non-fungible tokens (NFT) and blockchain technology to create a virtual gaming environment.
According to Footprint Analytics, GameFi began a period of explosive growth in March, which lasted until August, when transactions stabilized. GameFi's transactions also experienced two growth spikes during this period, in April and in December 2021.
Through GameFi, players can monetize their gaming experience by performing in-game actions and owning specific assets.
In general, players can earn in-game rewards by completing tasks, competing against other players and progressing through the different game levels. They can also transfer their assets outside the game to trade on crypto-currency exchanges (Binance, FTX...) and NFT marketplaces (OpenSea, Rarible...).
